Learn to Plaster: Beginner Steps, Timings and Practical Training

Want to learn to plaster but unsure where to start? Begin by understanding the surface, the materials and the sequence of work. This guide explains the main plastering stages, how timing affects the finish and where hands-on practice makes the difference.

If you would like an instructor beside you as you learn, YTA’s five-day plastering course gives beginners practical training in full-height bays at our Bradford centre. Longer ten-day and Level 1 options are available.

Before you start: check the surface and choose the right product

Plasterboard, existing plaster, masonry and painted backgrounds may need different preparation. Check that the background is suitable, sound and ready for the chosen plaster. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on joint treatment, suction control and primers; one PVA mixture is not a universal answer. British Gypsum’s MultiFinish product data sheet explains its requirements for different backgrounds.

Older textured coatings and some boards can contain asbestos. If you suspect asbestos, stop and obtain appropriate advice before disturbing the material. Do not scrape, sand or drill it simply to prepare for plastering. See HSE’s guidance on asbestos materials and the right action.

The tools you will get to know

  • A suitable plastering trowel and hawk.
  • Clean buckets and appropriate mixing equipment.
  • Tools for measuring, preparation and finishing corners.
  • The plaster, joint treatment, beads and primer specified for the background.
  • Suitable work clothing and the protective equipment required for the task and product.

Choose a manageable practice task and keep your work area organised. On a YTA course, tools and materials are provided for use during training, so you can build experience before deciding what equipment to buy.

Plastering stages: a beginner’s overview

StageWhat you are learning
1. PrepareAssess the background and complete the product-specific preparation.
2. MixUse clean equipment and the specified water quantity. Mix to the required consistency.
3. ApplyBuild an even application using controlled pressure and a manageable area.
4. Flatten and coatFollow the required coat sequence, filling low areas and controlling ridges.
5. TrowelRespond to the plaster as it firms, refining the surface without repeatedly disturbing it.
6. Finish and dryAim for the finish specified by the manufacturer; allow the surface to dry before decorating.

This is an outline, rather than one recipe for every plaster or wall. Choosing the preparation and recognising the condition of the material are skills you develop through practice.

How long between coats of MultiFinish plaster?

For Thistle MultiFinish, British Gypsum’s installation guide shows the second coat at approximately 20–45 minutes from the start, closing in at 45–60 minutes, trowelling at about 90 and 100 minutes, and a final trowel around 120 minutes. Its guide specifies a minimum combined thickness of 2mm for the two coats and a matt finish.

Those are approximate guide times for that product. Suction and temperature affect how the plaster behaves. Watch the material, check the current instructions and seek practical guidance if you are unsure; do not follow the clock alone.

Common problems when you are learning

  • The mix is setting faster than expected. Review the background, conditions, product and cleanliness of your equipment. Take advice before repeating the same approach.
  • Ridges remain after each pass. Get feedback on your pressure, trowel angle and the condition of the plaster.
  • The surface looks uneven. Check the background and the way you are distributing the material.
  • You are trying to cover too much at once. Choose a manageable practice task and build up as your control improves.

An instructor can watch what your hands and trowel are doing, demonstrate a change and help you try it again. That immediate feedback is one of the main reasons beginners choose practical training.

10-day practical course£1,500More workshop practice; non-accredited with a certificate of attendance.
10-day Level 1 option£1,900Training plus assessment towards the stated NOCN Cskills Level 1 units. Six Level 1 credits and unit-accreditation certificate on successful assessment.

Prices apply to starts from October 2026. The Level 1 price includes the £400 assessment addition; successful assessment provides the stated six Level 1 credits and NOCN Cskills unit accreditation. A short course is a practical foundation to build on with further experience.

A practical course within reach

YTA is at Unit 12a, Factory Street, Dudley Hill, Bradford, BD4 9NW, just off Bradford’s outer ring road. The centre is well connected to the M62 corridor: junction 26 links to the M606, while junction 27 provides an approach via the A650. Connections with the M1 and A1(M) bring much of northern England within practical reach. Plan your route to YTA and check traffic for your course start time.

Read independent YTA student reviews or arrange a centre visit. If travelling from further away, see the accommodation guide. Teaching normally runs Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm.

Frequently asked questions

Can a complete beginner learn to plaster?

Yes. A structured course starts with the foundations and gives you opportunities to practise. A consistent finish develops with guidance and repetition.

Does plastering always follow the same timings?

No. The product, background and conditions matter. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions and learn to recognise the condition of the plaster.

Should I polish the surface until it shines?

Follow the product’s specified finish. The MultiFinish guide linked above calls for a matt finish, using minimal water at the final stage.

When can I paint new plaster?

Allow the plaster to dry and follow the plaster and paint manufacturers’ recommendations. The current product data sheet explains decoration requirements; avoid assuming a fixed number of days for every room.

Will five days make me a professional plasterer?

Five days can give you a useful practical start. Professional consistency and judgement require further practice and experience.
